Celastrina ladon – ‘Spring’ Spring Azure

Caterpillar foods: dogwood, viburnum, and cherry flowers; possibly many others

Azures are a complicated group of butterflies: closely related, and it’s unclear which are separate species.  ‘Spring’ Spring Azures and ‘Summer’ Spring Azures are very similar, and I mostly tell them apart by the time of year I see them.  ‘Spring’ Spring Azures tend to be darker, with larger dark spots on the underside of their wings, and fly from April through early June.
