Even though we had terrible weather, we did see a few moths that braved the cold and rain. At 10:00pm it was 50 degrees and drizzling so I had the lights set up under my rain shelter under the deck.

The last few moths are ones that appeared after everyone else had left, and I was putting away the lights. The Underwing is the largest of the moths that came. It’s about 3 inches long from head to wingtip. It’s forewings are a pattern of soft grays, but they hide bright red-orange and black hindwings. This one didn’t want to show off its hindwings for a photo, so I’ve also included one I took several years ago with the hindwings showing.
